Day of the Dead, or día de Muertos is not Halloween, in case you were wondering. The Mexican holiday is a remembrance of the lives of loved ones who have passed.

It is celebrated on November 2nd.

The central focus altar or table where the deceased’s photos and favorite foods are placed is called an offrenda. There are also items representing fire, water, earth, and wind.

Besides brightly colored sugar skulls, other symbols seen during Dia de los Muertos are Monarch butterflies and Mexican marigolds.
